Ministry of Education Sent the Fifth Group of Specialists to Survey on Overseas Students Education in Medicine in China

      From March 19 to 21, the Ministry of Education (represented by the fifth group of specialists) came to Jianghan University to survey on overseas student’s education in medicine in China. In the afternoon of March 20, a survey meeting was held in Room A of Boxue Hall in the Academic Exchange Center, JHUN, where Chancellor Zhang Xingping met the deputy dean of Academic Department of China Education Association for International Exchange, Mr. Zhai Jinming, and the Section Chief of the Section for International Exchange of Hubei Provincial Department of Education, as well as the experts participating the survey, Professor Fan Lijie, Professor Gong Chaohui,Professor Chen Xia, and Professor Wang Meihao. The meeting was hosted by the Vice Chancellor Li Weidong. Chief representatives from the Dean’s Office,  Office of Foreign Affairs, School of Medicine, Affiliated Hospital of Jianghan University, School of International Education, together with the Chinese and foreign representatives of our University’s teachers and students also participated in the meeting.

      Vice Chancellor Li Weidong introduced the general condition of study and management in our university. He introduced that, our university now has been involved in 11 major subjects in 21 different Schools, that open undergraduate programs of 71 in number, and 3 academic type Master programs (including 4 major degree types). And our university has one working center for academician (in the major of environment and health), and one center for Post-doctoral creative practice. The university attaches great importance to internationalization., and has already hosted exchange programs, of exchange students visits and joint degree nature, with high education institutions from more than 10 countries. The university’s overseas student education program on medicine study in China only began three years ago and was still in its primary stage, but the policy support and logistics support have been very solid and strong. This program is in line with the education internationalization of the Wuhan city and Hubei Province, and is also working for the target of “modernization, internationalization, and ecologicalizaiton” of Wuhan city. In the future, we are devoted to a better outcome of the education in this respect, and systematically analyze and solve the problems of all sorts in practice.

  

  

      The Dean of School of Medicine, Mr. Shu Xiji reported about the overseas student’s education program in medicine. He pointed out that our university has enrolled international students of 3 grades on MBBS major, all together 299 students. The objective of this program is to educate them into international talents of practicality with capabilities of good professional qualities, primary clinical work potentials, life-long study potentials, and of accomplishing safe and sound tasks under guidance from superiors. The experiment center for medical teaching in the School of Medicine is the Standard Teaching Center of Hubei Province, and it includes various laboratories of 100 rooms in number, and 6000 square meters in space. Three university-level Institutes and one Provincial level lab of creative research, together with six school –level creative research labs, and one medicinal lab platform for the public are in the establishment of this school. “Fundamental Medicine” and “Pathology and Pathological Physiology” are the key majors of Hubei Province, while “Clinical Medicine” and “Chinese Medicine” are key majors of Wuhan City. This school opens courses that include 2 course of Hubei Provincial Excellence Course Program, and 6 courses of Jianghan University Excellence Course Program. The clinical resource is quite abundant, with 24 bases for clinical practice, including 4 attached hospitals, 1 institute of clinics, 5 educational hospitals, 8 clinical practice hospitals, 5 general practice institutions, and 1 public health practice institution. Within the team of teachers of this school, one is entitled for the “Hundred Men Initiative” of Hubei Province, and four are entitled for “Chutian Scholars Program”; one of them is entitled “Famous Ten Teachers of Wuhan City”, and two are entitled “Middle Aged Renowned Doctors of Chinese Medicine”. Two are enrolled into the “Shi Bai Qian” (Ten-Hundred-Thousand) Initiative of Wuhan City, and four teachers are entitled to special endowments from the government. Three young teachers were honored as receiving the “Excellent Yong Teachers” award. More than 30 of the specialists took main posts in various provincial and municipal level associations. In recent five years, more than 60 research programs of National Natural Science Fund were granted to the scholars of this school, and more than 570 programs of provincial and municipal level were granted to them. More than 80 research findings were published, and more than 50 patents of inventions were newly owned by our teachers. More than 40 awards were granted to this school’s members, and more than 5500 research papers were published openly, among which 70 were included in SCI, SSCI, EI, and ISTP. These teachers also published more than20 educational books and special studies. This school is the only training center for practice and judges of National Qualification Examination for Doctors (Clinical Practice), and is also the Comprehensive Lab and Reservation Center of Human Organisms for Wuhan Red Cross.

      The Deputy Dean of School of International Education introduced the enrolment of international students, and he reported that the enrolment is in strict compliance with the national laws and relevant policies, and is also in strict observation of national sovereignty and security as well as public interest. This school’s operation complies with the policy of “extending enrolment, bettering the structure, regulating the management, and ensuring the quality”. International students need to hold their valid passports, qualification papers of their diplomas, academic transcripts (including transcript of English, Biology, and Chemistry which qualifies grades above 60 per cent), “The Application Form for Study in Jianghan University as International Student”and“Financial Support Statement for International Student” before they can successfully register in the enrolment.

  

  

      Professor Fan Lijie of Zhejiang University, the team leader of the fifth team of the Ministry of Education on surveying the medical education on international students in China,acknowledged the achievement of our university on international education of medicine major. She pointed out that our university needs to regulate the mechanism of international education and medical education, and further bettering the management system. We need also more extensive cooperation with others, and establish strict mechanism for choosing international students, and raise the standards of this education. We need to converge with international standard and emphasize on English language characteristics of this program. Better communications are to be operated and individualized tutoring is to be fostered. The school needs training programs of school level and beyond school level to achieve better quality of the teaching practice, in their techniques of teaching and results of their courses.

  

      We need to increase the investment on various facilities of the medical education and build up a better standard and system for controllingthe quality of education. Special attention needs to be paid on invigilating the stages of teachings and feedbacks of teaching.

      During the survey, the team of specialists also audited classroom course teaching by chance and visited relevant labs; they went into School of International Education for examining various documents. Two meetings were held between these experts and the management members and teachers as well as students from the School of Medicine. They also visited Hospital Attached to Jianghan University and Clinical Medical School of Jianghan University, and examined on spot of the tutoring and the facilitations of the clinics.
